Classes:
Junior High Chorus - Focus of the class is on pitch development and principles of good singing. Attention is given to changing voices. Music reading skills, singing skills, and part independence are introduced in this class.
Concert Choir - Focus of the class is continued vocal development, music reading, performance of literature from various stylistic periods with some emphasis on multi cultural music.
Select Ensemble - This smaller group represents the most talented and most confident singers in the Concert Choir. As such, they are the core group for the larger choir. In addition to preparing the Concert Choir music, these students prepare selections that are more difficult. This group also accepts a limited number of engagements away from school, singing at Christmas parties and other civic functions.
Junior High Band - A performance based class that covers intermediate musical concepts. The 8th grade performs with the 7th grade in a concert setting. Students are required to attend lessons and complete course requirements as outlined on the syllabus. Course prerequisite – minimum of one year of Elementary Band or director’s approval.
Senior High Concert Band - A performance based class that covers advanced musical concepts. The Sr. High Band performs four concerts per year. Course prerequisite – minimum of one year of Jr. High Band or director’s approval.
Music Theory - a class that meets every day, first semester. Students become familiar with the nuts and bolts of music by sharpening their reading and listening skills and by developing skill in harmonic analysis. The three areas of study include theory, aural skills (ear training), and sight singing. This class is for anyone who may be considering significant involvement in post high school musical activity or anyone who just wants to understand music better. The class emphasis is on mastery of concepts and musical understanding rather than passing tests.
